Like you, I’m pretty much addicted to the call of the chirping iPhone (or the buzz of the bleeping laptop…I’m not choosy. Or good at alliterations). I can barely remember those long-ago pre-Internet days, when the only jarring interruptions came from phone calls from actual people, not robo-diallers.
To the mystification and amusement of my kids, I flit between Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Instagram, and yes, even sometimes Pinterest…and that’s not even counting blogs and YouTube.
Much as I love this place, though, I find aspects of it…jarring. Certain words and phrases jump out at me, and frankly, some of them really piss me off.
Here are a few:
It carries implications of inadequate personal hygiene, overt sexuality, promiscuity, and poor moral character. Oh, and also zits and bad fashion choices. Which as we all know are the ultimate female sins.
I love our animals. Our cats and dog are important members of our household. But I don’t confuse them with our children, and I refuse to refer to them by the fatuous term “fur-kids” (or worse, “fur-babies”). Full stop.
I shouldn’t even have to explain this one. Or its even-uglier sibling, “fucktard.” People who use them speak volumes about their own mental capacity…and not much about their intended target’s.
Also, every time someone calls someone else a retard/fucktard, another fur-kid gets run over by a car and goes to the Rainbow Bridge. Just sayin’.
Mansplaining is bi-directionally nasty.
And some women use it as an excuse not to to explain woman-stuff to men (who they claim are either too stupid or too steeped in patriarchy to grasp the obvious).
Either way, “mansplaining” belittles, denigrates, and ultimately silences opposition. It’s a power-grab, and a poor substitute for rational debate.
And no, I don’t owe anyone an explanation as to why. Figure it out.
YOLO: “carpe diem for idiots.”
I’m sure I’ll think of 10 more words to add to this list as soon as I sign off.
How about you? Got any faves you’d like to add?
